TSH — Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone
Think of TSH as your body's thermostat - it regulates your thyroid and controls how fast or slow your metabolism runs.
What does it do?
TSH is produced in the pituitary gland and signals the thyroid to produce the hormones T4 and T3. If the thyroid produces too little, the body raises TSH to compensate. If it produces too much, TSH drops. The TSH level therefore works as a mirror of your thyroid function.
Why does it matter?
The thyroid affects energy, weight, mood, hair, skin, and fertility. An imbalance in TSH can indicate underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism) thyroid. Both can affect your menstrual cycle and ability to become pregnant.
